Examine Yourselves! It's A Must Before Taking The Holy Communion!
Morning, on 7th of November, 2017, I was lying on my bed, thinking of the things Christians should know and understand. When God gave me (according to His grace) a revelation, which I know is from an old and infallible teaching of the church -- the holy communion.
I was thinking about mortals sins at that time when this Scripture from I Corinthians 11: 27-29 struck my mind, it says, 'Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgement on himself.'.
See that St. Paul here is talking about the proper way to take the communion, that the faithful should first examine himself for any mortal and venial sins that he has been committed before he take the communion.
But what is SIN that we may examine ourselves for it before taking the communion?
Sin is an act of rebellion against God and His will. We can categorize sin into two types; the Venial sin and the Mortal sin.
Venial sin is a kind of sin in which the person is not fully aware of what he has done, or doesn't know that what he had done is sin in the sight of God. It can be forgiven while he still alive or in purgatory after his death. It can't lead the faithful to eternal punishment, but only temporal punishment through purgatory if not forgiven when the faithful is still alive.
Mortal sin is a sin that can lead someone to eternal punishment of hell, it occurs when someone has the full knowledge of sin, but did it anyway with his consent. It can be forgiven while the person is still alive, by undergoing the Sacrament of confession and with penance. But, once not forgiven in this life, it cannot be purged through temporal punishment in purgatory, so, leading to eternal death/punishment in hell. St. Paul gave us the list of some mortal sin that one shouldn't commit, in Galatians chapter 5 verses 19 through 21 it says:
'Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.'
As I've mentioned above, sin is an act of rebellion against God. St. Paul have made himself clear about this matter, that whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord and For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. So, the bible clearly tells us, together with the church' tradition, that we should be in the STATE OF GRACE when having the holy communion. For upon taking the holy communion in the STATE OF SIN, we are treating the Sacrament of holy communion as without importance; therefore, committing the sin of SACRILEGE.
How do we be in the STATE OF GRACE before taking the holy communion?
If someone found out that he had committed venial sin, he must ask God for forgiveness through his prayer or through confession. But, if it is a mortal sin, he must undergo the Sacrament of Confession and penance, for him to be reconciled with God and with the church.
In the Eucharist, we are remembering the sufferings of Christ on our behalf and celebrating His resurrection. Christ deserves our purity and cleanliness of our heart before meeting Him in the Eucharist. Therefore, upon going to church every Sunday, it is a must for us to prepare our bodies and our spirit as the Scripture command we should.
